Sidebottom targets regular spot

Ryan Sidebottom is desperate to remain in the England fold after striking a blow for county cricket this summer.

Left-arm bowler Sidebottom followed the lead of Sussex wicketkeeper Matt Prior by performing at Test level against West Indies when he claimed eight wickets at Headingley.

"Perhaps what I have done has given other players hope, there are a lot of good ones in county cricket," said Sidebottom. "But I am not looking too far ahead; this is only my third Test and I want to perform again; I want to be a regular."

He added: "(Matthew) Hoggard is injured, so is Freddie (Andrew Flintoff), there are other guys ahead of me in the pecking order but if I keep going out and taking wickets hopefully I'll keep getting selected."

Despite playing in a winning team against Pakistan at Lord's in 2001 - coincidentally because of injury to Hoggard - Sidebottom was discarded.

Former England coach Duncan Fletcher's obsession with out-and-out speed in fast bowlers appeared to close the door on his international ambitions but 50 first-class wickets in both 2005 and 2006 left a lasting impression elsewhere.

"Everybody wants to play Test cricket and it had been a long time between games for me," Sidebottom added.

"Six years is a very long time but you never give up hope of playing. Just watching on telly you always feel you want to be part of an England team.

"I just worked hard every day in county cricket and got the ball to swing. I am never going to be 90 miles-an-hour but I obviously can do other things, as I proved last week. Trying to swing and seam it is something I can bring to the game."
