For the first time in Silverstone's history - after recently confirming a 90,000 sell-out for the grand prix on July 6 - organisers have now sold all 65,000 tickets for practice on Friday and 85,000 for qualifying on Saturday.

Richard Phillips, managing director of Silverstone Circuits Ltd, said: "The demand for tickets has been incredible. Only three weeks ago we announced that race day had sold out, now practice and qualifying have sold out too."

He added: "We will be at full capacity over all three days with a record combined crowd figure of 240,000. The atmosphere is going to be amazing.

"I have said it before, but we really do have the best fans in the world.

"They are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the sport, and will get right behind the three British drivers - Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and David Coulthard.

"It's going to be a fantastic event."

Organisers are already planning for next season's event, and aim to put tickets on sale the day after this year's race.
