Simms hails McRae quality

Salford are confident new coach Shaun McRae will not only save them from relegation but lead them into a bright new era.

Former St Helens and Hull coach McRae took over at The Willows on Monday with the immediate task of preventing the club from dropping out of the engage Super League.

Salford football director Steve Simms said of his fellow Australian: "Shaun is a quality coach and a good signing. I am sure he is the right man for the job, long term. There is a big future in this club and we feel he is the man to take us into a new era."

The City Reds are three points adrift at the foot of the table after a dismal start to the season, but their lofty ambitions remain intact.

The club hope to move to a new 20,000-capacity stadium at nearby Barton in 2009 and they firmly believe they can become one of the competition's big players.

Simms added: "He was obviously the number-one choice and we are lucky enough to get his services. The first obstacle is to stay in Super League and I'm pretty confident we can do that, but it's not just about keeping us up."
