Yardy, 99 not out at the time, was hit on the index finger of his left hand by MCC bowler Steve Harmison's viciously-bouncing delivery, and will miss the early stages of the county season as Sussex aim to make a successful defence of their title.

Robinson told PA Sport: "It is broken, and it is going to be six weeks minimum I think, which is a real shame. Michael is a big player for us."

He added: "He has scored lots of runs for us during the last two years, and he is a left-arm spinner in one-day cricket.

"He got a short ball, which he played brilliantly, but it hit him on the glove, and the glove didn't do its job.

"He is philosophical, but he will be down. He was 99 not out on the eve of a new season, and he was playing well.

"Perhaps he saw an England space, either as an all-rounder or as a front-line batsman, and then something like this happens."
