The 48-year-old takes over at the Withdean Stadium from Micky Adams, who parted company with the club on February 21.

Slade, who left Yeovil last month, begins work with immediate effect and will oversee his first game in charge against fellow strugglers Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road on Saturday.

Chairman Dick Knight said: "Russell was on my key-candidate shortlist from the beginning. His CV speaks for itself. He impressed when I first met him, he has the confidence to make things happen and I know he gives that to players. He has an excellent record and I am delighted to welcome him to the club."

Assistant manager Dean White and reserves boss Bob Brooker, who had been in temporary charge since Adams` exit, will remain with the club to assist Slade.
