Smells like team spirit to Lamps

Frank Lampard does not accept the view he will be solely responsible for carrying England's midfield fight when they open their World Cup campaign this weekend.

With Steven Gerrard injured, Lampard would appear to be England's major goal threat for Saturday's encounter with Andorra in Barcelona.

But the Chelsea man insists it will be a team effort to operate without the Liverpool talisman and said: "It's not about individuals. The manager is very strong on that, it's about a team effort."

He added: "The onus is not on me. The eyes are on all the team because we need to get results.

"We shouldn't single out any players. If people drop out we have a big enough squad to cope."

Nobody has any doubt England will emerge victorious. It is the manner of that triumph that counts with Croatia waiting in Zagreb four days later for a match that could define Fabio Capello's entire time as manager.

Few expect Capello to suffer the kind of abuse directed at Steve McClaren when England visited Montjuic 17 months ago.

But with the first grumblings of discontent being raised against the Italian following an unconvincing performance against the Czech Republic, there is certainly a feeling of restlessness beginning to develop among England fans.

"We just hope the fans who travel this time will be behind the team," he said. "When we went there before it was not a good atmosphere. Anyone who was there will know that.

"I don't know if it was as bad as I can remember but when you play for England you have to be tough and able to handle atmospheres like that."
