Smith backs Calderwood to make his mark

The 27-year-old Wigan flier has been called up as a direct replacement for his former Leeds team-mate Lee Smith, who has failed to recover from a foot injury.
"He played very well in the last six weeks of the competition. He was a bolter, if you like," said Smith. "He's come home very strongly and he adds a lot to us - his tryscoring ability and also his trysaving ability."
Calderwood's call-up caps a remarkable turn-around in fortunes for the London-born winger.
Ignored for the mid-season international against France and unable to command a regular place in Wigan's team in mid-season, Calderwood faced an uncertain future after being told his contract would not be renewed.
But Hull came in with an offer of a two-year contract and, with his mind settled, Calderwood produced his best rugby of the season, highlighted by a magnificent defensive effort in the Super League final eliminator at Leeds.
He then caught the eye in England's warm-up match against Wales earlier this month and was disappointed to miss out on selection for the opening game.
"Everyone who didn't play last week was disappointed and that showed in training this week," said Calderwood, who pulled out of the Scotland squad in a bid to make the England squad.
"Everyone is itching to play. Obviously you want to play against the best in the world."
"I started playing well during the end of the year and that is what got me selected for the trip. It was a tough time earlier in the year. I was playing reserve grade but things came together and I'm happy to be here."
