Smith facing lengthy ban

The Scottish Football Association have confirmed Rangers boss Walter Smith faces a four-match touchline ban if found guilty of misconduct for his sending off in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League game at Kilmarnock.

Smith was sent to the stands on Saturday for reacting furiously to Killie players he mistakenly thought were trying to encourage referee Steve Conroy to show Pedro Mendes a second yellow card.

Smith admitted after the game he was in the wrong for the incident and looks unlikely to appeal if charged by the SFA.

Under the governing body's disciplinary rules, Smith faces an automatic two-match touchline ban beginning 14 days from the incident in question.

However, two games are added to the punishment for every prior case of misconduct during the previous three years.

Smith served a two-match ban after being sent off in a Scottish Cup game against Hibernian in March 2008.

A four-match suspension would see the Ibrox boss sidelined from the October 4 Old Firm derby and games against St Johnstone and Hibs.

If Rangers beat Queen of the South in the Co-operative Insurance Cup on Wednesday night, Smith would also sit out the quarter-final.

If they lose, he would miss the November 1 SPL trip to Dundee United.
