Smith not concerned by atmosphere

Rangers manager Walter Smith insists his players are ready for "their first real test" on Tuesday as they attempt to secure their place in the Champions League group stages.

Armed with a 1-0 lead from the first leg in Glasgow, Rangers arrived in Serbia to face Red Star Belgrade but Smith is fully aware his players are still learning about each other, following a summer in which 10 new faces have arrived at Ibrox.

Smith said: "We have a young group of players but we have experience too and atmosphere never beat a team. We've cobbled this side together quickly and, while they've done extremely well, this is their first real test."

He added: "A lot of teams in the Champions League are settled. They've won a championship together and they've been over the course together. That hasn't happened with my team. We're having to work hard to build up that confidence and that belief.

"It's a massive challenge because we need to reach the highest level with a team that's just been put together."

Smith is banking on his side scoring. Do that early and it could kill off the tie, with Jean-Claude Darcheville expected to be asked to lead the attack as a lone striker, meaning Kris Boyd, a matchwinner for his country last week, could be on the bench.
