Smith seeks United assurances

Striker Alan Smith has admitted he will 'consider his options' unless he is given assurances over his future with Manchester United.

The former Leeds frontman helped the club to the Barclays Premiership title last season after overcoming serious injury problems, but has now been linked with a move away from Old Trafford.

He told The Sun: "If they are going to sell me, I'd like to know. But I won't find out unless I get to speak to the manager. If you're no longer wanted, then you have to consider your options. I want to be out there from the start."

Smith insists the ball is now in boss Sir Alex Ferguson's court.

He added: "If the manager tells me he wants me, I'm there for him. If he says he doesn't, it's time to move on."
