Smith springs surprises

Harlequins centre Tony Clubb and Huddersfield prop Darrell Griffin are the surprise inclusions in England coach Tony Smith's initial train-on squad for the World Cup.

London-born Clubb, 21, and former Wakefield forward Griffin, 27, were among 13 players chosen from the six Super League clubs whose season came to an end at the weekend.

Huddersfield, who finished the season in 10th place despite winning their last four away matches, provide two other players in former Wigan wingers Martin Aspinwall and David Hodgson.

Clubb is joined by his Harlequins team-mates Rob Purdham, who captained England to a Federation Shield triumph two years ago, and prop Louis McCarthy-Scarsbrook.

Hull provide winger Gareth Raynor and prop Garreth Carvell, who are both Great Britain internationals, while the Castleford duo of Michael Shenton and Joe Westerman are predictable inclusions and there are places for Wakefield centre Ryan Atkins and Hull KR duo Peter Fox and Shaun Briscoe.

Fox made his England debut in the 56-8 win over France in June.

The 13 players will take part in regular squad sessions under Smith, who will make further additions as clubs are eliminated from the play-offs.

Smith will name his final 24-man squad on October 7 but forwards Sam Burgess (Bradford) and Sean O'Loughlin (Wigan) have already been ruled out through injury.

England launch their World Cup bid against Papua New Guinea in Townsville on October 25 but, before they depart, have a warm-up game against Wales at Doncaster on October 10.
