Smith stokes Chasetown dream

Having held the Coca-Cola League One strugglers to a shock 1-1 draw, Tuesday night's replay saw the British Gas League Midland Division part-timers complete the upset, thanks to Smith's 89th-minute header and a double penalty miss from Rodgers.

The Vale striker twice had the ball on the spot within seven second-half minutes, firstly when Vaughan Thomas brought down Calum Willock. That effort hit the crossbar but Rodgers soon had the chance to make amends when he was felled by Joe Williams. This time he was denied by goalkeeper Lee Evans. Smith made Rodgers pay when he nodded in to set up a third-round home clash with Cardiff.

Luton set up a glamour tie with Liverpool after beating Nottingham Forest 1-0 at Kenilworth Road in a re-arranged second-round fixture. Calvin Andrew sealed victory in the 54th minute, which means a repeat of the third-round fixture from two seasons ago, which Liverpool came back to win 5-3 after falling 3-1 behind.

Adam Birchall's 83rd-minute goal broke Burton hearts and sent Barnet through to the third round. Birchall took advantage of some poor defending in the Burton box to stab home for a 1-0 win to set up a tie with Swindon next month.

A penalty by Michael Ricketts five minutes from time give Walsall a 1-0 win over Northampton and a home tie against Millwall.

Ricketts, on loan from Oldham, had put substitute Ishmel Demontagnac through with a fine pass and the youngster was brought down by Northampton defender Danny Jackman.

Southend were comfortable 3-0 winners over Oxford despite a missed penalty that could have given Charlie MacDonald a hat-trick.

MacDonald gave the home side the lead after five minutes but saw his spot-kick saved by Billy Turley on the stroke of half-time. But there was still time for a second penalty to be awarded before the break and Dean Morgan made no mistake.

MacDonald wrapped up the scoring in the finals seconds to set up a home tie with Dagenham and Redbridge.
