Solid Jankovic progresses

World number one Jelena Jankovic made a strong start to the 2009 Australian Open with a 6-1 6-3 first-round victory over Austrian Yvonne Meusburger at Rod Laver Arena on Monday.

The top seed's build-up to the tournament had been hampered by a bout of flu, which caused her to withdraw from a tournament in Hong Kong and left her struggling in practice earlier in the week in Melbourne.

But despite a lack of proper practice, Jankovic looked solid as she defeated Meusburger in 70 minutes in her first grand slam as world number one.

Jankovic looked comfortable from the start as she stormed into 5-0 lead and though Meusburger won the sixth game, Jankovic took the next one to claim the opening set.

The Serb then immediately broke her opponent's serve to take the first game of the second set but Meusberger broke back in the next game to level at 1-1.

The two continued to battle but Jankovic moved ahead in the seventh game and then closed out the match.
