Chasing 349 to win, Sussex were dismissed for 313 shortly after the lunch break when Robin Martin-Jenkins (27) was caught by Marcus Trescothick off Charl Willoughby (four for 80).
Sussex had earlier given themselves a chance of victory as Chris Nash (134) and nightwatchman Jason Lewry (25) put on a stand of 60 for the fifth wicket. However, Lewry and Nash's dismissals were followed by three more wickets as Somerset seized the initiative before lunch and finished off the hosts shortly after the restart.

Champions Durham closed out a 10-wicket victory over Warwickshire at Edgbaston, thanks mainly to a sensational burst from England seamer Graham Onions.
The Test star claimed seven for 38 as the Bears were skittled for just 177 following on in their second innings - a lead of only 20 which was knocked off by Durham's openers in four overs. Ian Bell, another Test hopeful, was the hosts' top man with 57.
It was the third day at Liverpool, where Lancashire responded well to conceding a first-innings deficit of 137 to close on 144 for two.
In Division Two, Essex claimed the glory on an exciting final day at Tunbridge Wells as they completed a 122-run victory over Kent, while struggling Leicestershire will be satisfied with a draw after they followed up their first-innings 165 with 487 for five against Surrey at Grace Road.
Elsewhere, Glamorgan and Northamptonshire drew in Cardiff after declarations left the visitors chasing 326 to win and Middlesex face an uphill battle to save their match against Gloucestershire at the end of day two in Bristol.
