Soper and Clark vie for ECB role

Former Surrey chairman Mike Soper and Somerset chairman Giles Clark are the only two nominations as candidates to become the new chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board.

The pair were nominated for the position vacated by David Morgan, who is due to become the new president of the International Cricket Council in October, and will contest an election for the post.

All chairmen of the first-class counties and the chairman of the MCC will be balloted on their preferred candidate, who will take up his post on October 1 providing he is endorsed by the full membership of the ECB.

The new chairman will work alongside chief executive David Collier until March 31 2009, with Soper believed to be the leading candidate among the counties.

The pair are the only nominations following the decision of Bill Morris, the former secretary of the Transport and General Workers' Union and a non-executive member of the management board, not to stand as a candidate.
