Sotherton hopes still alive

Kelly Sotherton kept alive her slim chances of an Olympic medal in the heptathlon after producing a good performance in the javelin.

The penultimate discipline has often been Sotherton's Achilles heel but she shrugged off a foul in the opening round to record a best of 37.66 metres in Beijing's Bird's Nest Stadium.

With the second javelin pool containing the leading trio of Nataliia Dobrynska, Hyleas Fountain and Lyudmila Blonska yet to start, Sotherton would have to wait to discover what she needed to do in the final event.

The 31-year-old is one of the best 800m runners in the competition and was hoping she had not left herself too much to do to add to her Olympic bronze from Athens four years ago.

On the track, British pair Marilyn Okoro and Jenny Meadows failed to advance to the final of the 800m after finishing sixth in their respective semi-finals.

Okoro clocked a time of one minute 59.53 seconds and Meadows was 0.10secs quicker despite being involved in some pushing at the bell which saw Sviatlana Usovich (correct) of Belarus almost sent crashing to the track.

"I should have made the final," Okoro said. "I just didn't stick to my race plan and got pushed about a bit.

"It is another one for the memory bank. I'm not going to say I'm happy to make the semis but I can learn from it."
