Sotherton moves up to third

Kelly Sotherton produced a season-best shot putt performance to jump to third place in the heptathlon after three events at the World Championships - but Jessica Ennis' challenge suffered a setback at the Nagia Stadium.

Commonwealth Games champion Sotherton opened with 14.02metres before quickly adding another 12cm to leapfrog Ennis into third place behind defending champion Carolina Kluft and Ukraine's Lyudmila Blonska.

Ennis, leader after the 100metres hurdles, continued to slide down the table after struggling to 11.93m and trails leader Kluft by 243 points in sixth place after three events.

Meanwhile, Great Britain sprint trio Marlon Devonish, Mark Lewis-Francis and Craig Pickering completed a satisfactory day's work as all three secured places in Sunday's 100m semi-finals.

Devonish, who produced a personal best of 10.06secs in Sheffield in July, followed up his 10.13secs showing in the first round with an identical performance to finish second behind Tyson Gay.

Lewis-Francis produced a season's best 10.17secs, while Pickering was the slowest of the British trio at 10.21secs.

Joint world record-holder Asafa Powell also advanced with a reserved display, which still saw the Jamaican clock 10.01secs.

Earlier, Jenny Meadows, Jemma Simpson and Marilyn Okoro comfortably advanced through their respective 800m heats.
