South Africans name weakened side

South Africa coach Jake White has surprised many by naming a virtual second-string side for the away leg of this year's Tri-Nations series.

White, whose side lost 26-21 to the All Blacks in Durban on Saturday, made the call to rest 20 top players ahead of this year's World Cup and decided to send the second team over for one-off away Tests with Australia in Sydney on July 7 and New Zealand in Christchurch on July 14.

White has not yet selected a captain, although Bob Skinstad and hooker Gary Botha are the favourites.

Injured players such as Bryan Habana, John Smit, Fourie du Preez, Pierre Spies and Juan Smith were not considered, while the majority who played in Durban will also stay at home.

Brothers Bismarck and Jannie du Plessis and fly-half Peter Grant are the only uncapped members of the squad, while Botha, Skinstad, JP Pietersen and Ruan Pienaar all played in the loss to the All Blacks. Wynand Olivier, Pedrie Wannenburg and Johann Muller all came on as substitutes.

There was also a recall for controversial flanker Luke Watson, while Cobus Visagie - now playing for Saracens - was recalled to anchor the scrum. Michael Claassens was named as the second scrum-half.
