South fired up by criticism

Melanie South reckons her shock doubles victory with Alex Bogdanovic provided the perfect riposte to recent criticism of British youngsters.

Tim Henman attacked what he called the "culture of mediocrity" after not one Briton reached the third round of the singles at Wimbledon, and LTA chief executive Roger Draper threatened to withdraw funding to under-achieving British players.

But South, who alongside Bogdanovic lifted British spirits with a sensational 6-4 3-6 6-3 second-round win over top-seeded Americans Mike Bryan and Lisa Raymond, said: "The criticism helps me because I want to prove people wrong. We've been working hard and this could be good because it will fire people up."
