Spirit matters to Gower

Former England captain David Gower believes Paul Collingwood's decision to uphold the appeal to dismiss New Zealand's Grant Elliott was against the spirit of the game.

Elliott was run out following a collision with Ryan Sidebottom after the penultimate game of the NatWest Series which the tourists won to claim a 3-1 overall win.

Collingwood later apologised to Kiwi counterpart Daniel Vettori and said it had been a split-second decision, but Gower told BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme: "What is the bigger disappointment - the Collingwood incident or the fact England are still losing one-day internationals?"

He added: "The Collingwood thing strikes me harder only because in cricket I think it is so important that standards are maintained.

"Although he defended himself and though he apologised the chance was missed to uphold what the MCC have been driving home for the last few years - that thing called the spirit of cricket. I think everyone knows that chance has gone.

"He is still a good bloke, he is still a good player but I think that is the one thing that will stand out for the week."

Gower was also reluctant to accept Collingwood's explanation, saying: "There are decisions made every 20 seconds if you are in the field in a one-day international.

"It's getting tense, you are aware your side are in danger of losing. "There are all sorts of influences on you every time you make a decision.

"What struck me was that Mark Benson the umpire, although he was powerless to do anything without the help of Collingwood, did the right thing.

"That gesture - putting his arms on the captain's shoulders and asking him are you sure about this - twice I'm sure - gave Collingwood every chance to say 'I see what you mean, maybe we can withdraw that appeal'. So, maybe they will try to move on."
