Pearce was sacked following a disappointing Barclays Premiership campaign which saw City eventually finish 14th, and there have been problems off the field - most notably involving midfielder Joey Barton, who recently criticised Pearce's transfer policy before being suspended following a training ground incident.
Mills told BBC Radio Five Live: "Some players may have been slightly discontented this season. Some have said their pieces in the papers and the press and they've felt things haven't been going well. Ultimately that's for a new manager to come in and put right. You need happy players. A happy camp is normally a successful camp."
Former England right-back Mills featured little during the season due to the emergence of Micah Richards and had a spell on loan at Hull before Christmas.
