Spurs progress comes at cost

Gilberto was at fault for Artem Dzjuba's opener and when the Spartak Moscow striker added a second, there was a real chance of Spurs crashing out of Europe. Redknapp took Gilberto off at the break, the third time the full-back has been hauled off at the interval during his brief Spurs career.

"I think he was quite happy to come off at half-time," Redknapp said. "I don't think there is a way back for him here. I think the boy doesn't want to play here, that is the problem now."

He added: "He's a nice guy but I don't think he feels confident playing here."

Spurs mounted a comeback and levelled through Luka Modric and Tom Huddlestone - but the scorer of their first goal suffered a tight hamstring and Aaron Lennon's groin is now a problem too.

"I wanted to take Modric off at half-time," Redknapp admitted. "I only wanted to give him half a game because he is very important to us.

"He ended up with a tight hamstring and Aaron Lennon ended up with a tight groin. They could be struggling for Newcastle on Sunday. We'll have to see how they are, they won't train on Friday. It will be touch and go I think."

The 2-2 draw meant Spurs finished second in Group D and face a clash against a Champions League drop-out when the draw is made in Switzerland on Friday.

"I won't be sitting around in the social club with a pint of beer saying we want a big draw," Redknapp said. "We'll be training and I'll find out.

"Doing well in the Premier League is the only thing I think about, and obviously the Carling Cup is important as well now. Getting league points over Christmas is going to be massive for us, getting up that league table."
