Sri Lanka batsmen dominate

Sri Lanka's top order turned in impressive performances as the tourists steadily marched to a strong position on day one of the first Test against Pakistan in Karachi.

Opener Malinda Warnapura gave his side a bright start with a breezy 59 off just 48 deliveries, Kumar Sangakkara made a compact 70 and captain Mahela Jayawardene rode his luck en route to 69 not out.

At tea, Sri Lanka had amassed 248 for three with Jayawardene batting alongside Thilan Samaraweera (39 not out).

Pakistan had begun their first Test in 14 months with some success when Umar Gul dismissed opener Tharanga Paranavitana with just the fourth ball of the day.

Paranavitana, on debut, edged the first delivery he faced straight to Misbah-ul-Haq at second slip.

Sangakkara then joined Warnapura at the crease and the two left-handers took control against Pakistan's pace attack on a sedate pitch, sharing a 90-run stand for the second wicket.

However, fast bowler Yasir Arafat broke the partnership by dislodging Warnapura, who was caught by Misbah at second slip.

Sangakkara survived a run of chance early in his innings and was again fortunate when a miscued pull fell wide of Younus Khan at mid-off. But he looked in impressive touch, driving with authority and scoring fluently.

Sangakkara and Jayawardene added 84 runs for the third wicket and had looked set to collect plenty more when Sangakkara fell, stepping out to cart leg-spinner Danish Kaneria over the top but failing to clear Misbah at mid-wicket.

Jayawardene was dropped on 17 by Umar Gul off his own bowling and again on 43 by Misbah off Sohail Khan - misses which were characteristic of Pakistan's poor show in the field.
