Sri Lanka tour could be cancelled

Sri Lankan sports minister Gamini Lokuge has conceded his country's tour of England next year could now be cancelled.

Sri Lanka are due to travel to England for Test and one-day series' in May but the trip clashes with the Indian Premier League.

Now, unless the itinerary can be redrafted, the tour could be called off as Lokuge concedes England may not want to face an under-strength side and he told Sri Lankan newspaper the Daily Mirror: "I told (SLC) to talk to the ECB and find a way out at the earliest, if England finds it difficult to play with the team we select and send."

He added: "I understand that (England's) television rights and income for the proposed tournament could be jeopardised if you do not send the star players.

"I told (SLC) to release the 13 IPL-contracted Sri Lanka players to play the IPL tournament and select a team with the remaining group of players, who are also equally talented, for the England tour.

"If there is any problem it should be discussed and sorted out."

The Test series would appear to be the most under threat, as the ODI dates do not clash with the IPL.

The ODI series is scheduled to begin on May 27 next year while the IPL tournament runs from April 10 to May 25.

Among the Sri Lankans who have signed up for the IPL are big name players like captain Mahela Jayawardene, off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, Kumar Sangakara and Sanath Jayasuriya.
