Sri Lanka tour in doubt

Sri Lanka's proposed tour of England appears set to be cancelled or postponed after leading players asked president Mahinda Rajapakse to intervene.

On Tuesday it was announced that Sri Lanka would play two Tests and three one-day internationals in England in April and May next year - plugging a gap in the calendar caused by the cancellation of England's series against Zimbabwe.

However, those dates clash with the second edition of the Indian Premier League, in which 13 Sri Lanka players are contracted to play. It is those players who have written to Rajapakse, and he has agreed to act on their concerns.

"The president promised to look into the players' grievances and instructed the sports minister to ask the interim committee to draw up alternative proposals," said Rajapakse's spokesman, Lucien Rajakarunanayake.

The England and Wales Cricket Board have declined to comment on the matter until they have heard from Sri Lanka Cricket.

The IPL will run from April 10 to May 29 next year.
