Sri Lankan XI not yet in Harm's way

Steve Harmison watched his England colleagues toil in the heat after joining the Test tour of Sri Lanka.

Harmison, 29, who flew in from South Africa on Tuesday morning alongside bowling coach Ottis Gibson, will play the final two days of England's opening tour match against the Sri Lanka Cricket Board President's XI.

After winning the toss, the hosts were 174 for three at tea, anchored by an unbeaten 76 from Upul Tharanga.

Stuart Broad claimed the first breakthrough as England's bowlers were given an immediate chance to acclimatise.

Broad was into the attack for the 12th over of the innings and struck in his second over when Dilruwan Perera gloved one through to the wicketkeeper.

That was the solitary success in the morning session, although Broad would have doubled his wicket tally had Ian Bell held on at gully from Malinda Warnapura.

Ryan Sidebottom, who shared the new ball with Matthew Hoggard, then delivered a fine afternoon spell, which included the removal of left-hander Warnapura, trapped leg before on the back foot.

Sri Lanka's second string were then reduced to 126 for three in the next over when home captain Tillekaratne Dilshan skied to deep cover off Monty Panesar.

It was a good comeback from left-arm spinner Panesar, who endured a nightmare start. He conceded five fours in all from Warnapura's bat, the first couple edged but the final three all clattered through the covers off the back foot.
