Stars lands Derby glory

John Oxx's colt (11-4) travelled beautifully throughout for Mick Kinane, who was winning his third Derby, and beat market leader Fame And Glory by a length and three-quarters, with Masterofthehorse a neck away in third and Rip Van Winkle fourth.
The 49-year-old Kinane had little cause for concern as he settled behind pacesetters Golden Sword and Age Of Aquarius, and two furlongs out he was the only jockey not moving. When he pressed the button, the response was immediate.
There was no sign of Sea The Stars stopping as he held off the Ballydoyle squad, with Fame And Glory never quite looking like catching the winner and Masterofthehorse making up ground from the rear, while Rip Van Winkle got going all too late.
Sea The Stars was emulating the big-race double last done by the mighty Nashwan in 1989.
Kinane said: "He is so quick, with a very high cruising speed. He improved enormously from Newmarket. John has done a fantastic job, and he has improved so much physically.
"He over-raced during the race as they weren't going quick enough for him. I was happy with the position I had as it was ideal and meant I wouldn't get any dead wood in my way.
"When I got on this horse last May I couldn't believe my luck. He has the attitude to be a great horse and is a pleasure to be around."
