Start delayed at soggy Edgbaston

No play was possible on the first morning of the third Ashes Test between England and Australia at Edgbaston as the recent poor weather continued to hit the Birmingham area.

A second inspection was scheduled for noon after wet weather delayed the start, but further light rain prevented umpires Rudi Koertzen and Aleem Dar from taking a look.

Groundstaff worked through the night, aided by five super-sopper machines, in a mass mop-up operation. But despite their efforts around the clock, one of the practice strips off the square was left like a quagmire and the Rea Bank stand side of the ground was extremely boggy.
