Staunton accepts Leeds role

Former Republic of Ireland boss Steve Staunton has returned to management after accepting an offer to become Gary McAllister's assistant at Leeds.

McAllister, who only replaced Dennis Wise at Elland Road six days ago, has brought in Staunton initially until the end of the season.

The pair are reunited again as, having been players together at Liverpool, McAllister also signed his former team-mate when he was manager at Coventry earlier this decade.

"I'm delighted to be here. Gary brought me to Coventry as a player, I played with him at Liverpool, and it's nice to team up again," Staunton told the club's website, leedsunited.com.

"I hope I can be of assistance and help this great club get back to where it belongs.

"It's a great opportunity to work at a big club with a good manager and learn the ropes from someone else on the inside and see how a club runs.

"Your next progression after playing is coaching and managing and this is a great opportunity for ourselves to be part of something that will be big in a few years."

Staunton was appointed successor to Brian Kerr as Republic of Ireland coach in January 2006 but was sacked last October after an unsuccessful Euro 2008 qualifying campaign and has been out of football since.
