Lancashire all-rounder Flintoff, 29, missed the drawn opening contest at Lord's last week after aggravating his troublesome left ankle.
Although Flintoff remains a doubt for the Leeds contest starting on Friday, he appeared to be in good spirits after following a handful of looseners on the square with the equivalent of four overs bowling at close to full capacity in the nets.
England will be desperate for their reigning player of the year to feature and he will test the ankle further on Thursday.
"It would be premature to make any predictions at the moment, we are keen to see how he pulls up," an England spokesman said. "Things are going according to plan - the medical staff want him to bowl on consecutive days, so he will replicate what he has done today (Wednesday)."
Flintoff failed to get fit for Lord's despite having a cortisone injection in the joint to help speed up the healing process.
Should he make himself available one of England's Lord's centurions Paul Collingwood and Ian Bell will miss out with captain Michael Vaughan returning at number three after more than an 18-month absence from Test cricket.
Dropping either will be cruel and if the decision was merely statistics-based it would be Andrew Strauss, who led the side last week, making way rather than Collingwood, a double centurion in the Ashes, or Bell, who has four hundreds in his last 10 Test outings.
