Steyn gives South Africa winning chance

Dale Steyn struck at both ends of the afternoon session on day four to help South Africa edge towards victory in the third Test against Australia in Cape Town.

The Proteas paceman removed Michael Hussey for 39 in his second over after lunch and then struck again in his penultimate over before tea when he dismissed Michael Clarke for 47 to leave the tourists reeling at 231 for six.

Brad Haddin was the other man to go, out for 18, as Australia were left still needing 211 runs just to make their hosts bat again.

Resuming after the break at 142 for three, Hussey's determined innings came to an instant end when he was surprised by a Steyn ball that kicked up off the pitch and succeeded only in finding JP Duminy at gully.

Haddin came in with a little more intent and was handed a lifeline when he was put down in a Paul Harris over by close fielder AB de Villiers in what was a tough chance that took the bat and pad along the way.

However, the bowler had his revenge in his next over when he tempted the Australian wicketkeeper to come down the track and attempt to lift him for four.

The ball only ended up being chipped into the air and Duminy ran back from mid-on to take a fine diving catch.

Harris almost struck again a few balls later with a flatter delivery that trapped new batsman Andrew McDonald on the crease, but umpire Asad Rauf ruled the all-rounder not out.

The bowler asked for the decision to be referred, but TV official Billy Bowden agreed with Rauf as the ball looked to be sliding down leg side.

And Steyn then removed the last of the recognised batsmen, when he sent in a full length ball that the Australian vice-captain tried to play through the covers, but the ball was played on to his stumps as South Africa moved closer to a consolation win.
