Both recipients were winning the award for the second time, and Strauss is hoping his recognition proves an omen for Ashes success for England - as it did in 2005.

"This is the second time I have won this award, and I regard it as a great honour to be named Vodafone England Player of the Year," said 32-year-old Strauss, who has had a run-laden winter for his country in India and the Caribbean.

He added: "The last time was in 2004, and I received the award in early 2005. Let's hope that this is an omen for this extremely exciting summer ahead."

Strauss inherited the England captaincy from Kevin Pietersen at the start of this year.

But it was long before that when the left-handed opener began the run of form which has earned the annual award from team sponsors Vodafone.

"Last year was memorable for me - starting with a hundred in New Zealand - and I was fortunate enough to end the 12 months with two centuries in the same game in Chennai against India," he recalled.

"I would like to thank Vodafone for this award and all the awards for outstanding individual achievements. I know all the England players treasure these awards."

Strauss was England's man of the series in last summer's victory over New Zealand, before his two hundreds in Chennai - only the 10th time an Englishman has topped three figures twice in the same match - and most recently centuries in three consecutive Tests in the West Indies.

Taylor has won her award for the second successive year, having made 324 runs in England's World Cup campaign - with a top score of 101 - and already been named the International Cricket Council's player of the tournament as well as one of Wisden's five Cricketers of the Year.
