Strauss can turn England round - Miller

National selector Geoff Miller has backed new captain Andrew Strauss to drive the England team forward on the eve of the Caribbean Test series - but regrets predecessor Kevin Pietersen's reign was short-lived.

Opening batsman Strauss was chosen as captain in the wake of the fiasco which resulted in Pietersen and coach Peter Moores losing their jobs. The chaos gave Strauss just two weeks to unite the dressing room ahead of a four-Test series.

Miller said: "It's a tough job for Strauss but he's a tough bloke. He's very level. He knows what direction he wants the team to go in and he knows what kind of unit he wants.

"I'm very pleased with the way he's gone about it. Kevin did things in a completely different way.

"He captains the side the way he plays and Strauss captains it the way he plays. They're completely different.

"I appointed Kevin in the hope that he would be very forward thinking. Unfortunately it didn't work out.

"Andrew will do it in a different way, very measured and logical and very sensibly.

"The reaction of the squad to him has been absolutely fantastic. They've bought into it all while Kevin has been superb. He's knuckled down and there's been no animosity in the changing room whatsoever."
