Strauss declares war on Aussies

England began their push for victory in the second Ashes Test with captain Andrew Strauss deciding to declare and give his bowlers two days to try to secure a lead in the npower series.

The decision to declare 521 runs ahead, on 311 for six, came after an assessment of the overhead conditions, which England hope will aid their swing and seam bowlers.

It gives them two days to dismiss Australia, who already face the prospect of having to break the world Test record for the highest successful final-innings total if they are to secure an unlikely victory - currently the 428 for seven recorded by West Indies against them in Antigua in 2002-3.

But England were aware they face a tough battle over the next two days having been in a similar position last year against South Africa, who successfully survived 167 overs to save the match.

Sri Lanka also held out for 199 overs in 2006 to draw the match at Lord's, where England tied six Test matches in a row prior to their victory over West Indies earlier this summer.
