The Middlesex left-hander was omitted from the party which lost the first Test to Sri Lanka in Kandy despite being awarded a central contract in the summer, however, the 30-year-old opening batsman is desperate to win his place back and believes playing in New Zealand can only help his chances.
"I am really excited about the possibility of playing cricket in New Zealand ahead of England's tour there in the new year," said Strauss, who has scored more than 3,223 runs in 43 Tests at an average of 40.7.
"I have been really impressed by the professionalism and ambition of Northern Districts and I feel that this is a golden opportunity for me to score some runs, experience a new challenge, and adapt to New Zealand conditions prior to England's tour.
"I am very focused on getting selected for this tour, winning my place back, and making sure I build on the success I have had to date personally, as well as helping England win Test matches."
Strauss will fly out to New Zealand at the beginning of January to join his new team-mates in Hamilton.
He is playing on a short-term contract which will end before England arrive.
Peter Moores' side play two Twenty20s, five one-day internationals and three Test matches in New Zealand between February 5 and March 26.
