Strauss falls early

Andrew Strauss' hopes of ending his long wait for a Test century evaporated within the first three overs today as West Indies strengthened their advantage in the final npower Test.

Resuming the fourth day at Chester-le-Street trailing by 166 on 121 for four, England's hopes of achieving parity rested with Strauss in conditions again ideal for swing bowling.

But instead of leading England's counter-attack, Strauss fell in the fourth over of the day with the tourists reducing them to 165 for six.

Strauss added only five to his overnight total of 72 when the Middlesex left-hander became the fourth victim of the innings for hostile fast bowler Fidel Edwards.

Extracting greater pace and bounce from the wicket than other members of the West Indies' attack, Edwards induced Strauss into edging a lifting delivery behind to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin.

The tourists claimed another wicket when Ian Bell attempted to drive a Daren Powell delivery and a thick outside edge was snapped up by Runako Morton.
