Strong India do not enforce follow-on

India decided not to enforce the follow on against England in the final npower Test after claiming an emphatic 319-run first innings lead.

Resuming at the Oval on 326 for nine trailing by 338 needing a further 139 runs to make India bat again, England frustrated the tourists' efforts for half an hour as they looked to wrap up the innings.

But last man Monty Panesar, who had already survived one close call for lbw in Anil Kumble's previous over, was finally removed in that manner for nine as England were dismissed for 345.

It left India captain Rahul Dravid with a dilemma about whether to enforce the follow on with a 319-runs lead or bat on in the knowledge it would condemn England to batting last on a worn, dry pitch.

After consulting his senior players, however, Dravid decided not to enforce the follow on and avoid England suffering that humiliation for the first time since the drawn final Test in Antigua against West Indies in 2004.
