The 35-year-old admitted the decision to stay at the club had been easy.

He told evertonTV: "It was pretty straightforward to be honest. It is not as if I'm 21 and it was going to get complicated, I am happy to be signing and proud I'm still able to play at the top of the Premiership at 35. It is a nice moment for me."

He added: "I dreamed of playing for Everton when I was a five-year-old lad and now, hopefully, this is the club where I will end my career."

Stubbs returned to Everton after a frustrating six-month spell at Sunderland in January 2006.

During his second spell with the Toffees, Stubbs has made 38 appearances - including 31 in the last season.
