Magpies boss Joe Kinnear confirmed after his side's battling 2-2 draw with Manchester City that the official will study replays of the 12th-minute decision which saw the Senegal international sent off for a trip on Robinho, and handed the visitors to chance to take the lead from the penalty spot.

Television replays clearly showed that Beye had played the ball, and Kinnear said: "I have been in to have a chat with him and he is prepared to have a look at it, and he will let me know what his views are in about four or five days."

He added: "He is such an honest kid, the lad who made the tackle. He said to me, 'Gaffer, I swear to God, I got the ball first'.

"Thankfully, the TV playback clearly shows he did get the ball first."

Asked if he is hopeful that the red card, which will keep Beye out of Saturday's derby trip to Sunderland, will be rescinded, Kinnear said: "From what I have seen on the screen so far, I would certainly be hopeful, yes.

"It was a hard one to call, but referees, like all of us, makes mistakes and please God, he will put it right because we are not in a position now, having just got him [Beye] back, that I would want to lose him."

Newcastle looked dead and buried when, with a distraught Beye heading for the dressing room, Robinho buried his spot-kick.

But for the second time in as many games, the Magpies launched a fightback against the odds and were back on terms with a minute for the first half remaining when Shola Ameobi bundled home his first Barclays Premier League goal in two years.

Remarkably, the 10 men took the lead with 64 minutes gone when City skipper Richard Dunne sliced a Geremi corner into his own net. But Steven Ireland, who had earlier forced a superb save from Shay Given, poked home the equaliser from close range, and went agonisingly close to snatching victory at the death with a shot which just evaded the far post.
