Surprise debut for Tremlett

Hampshire seamer Chris Tremlett was given a surprise Test debut today at the start of the npower series against India after injury ruled out Matthew Hoggard from their attack.

The 6ft 7ins bowler came in to replace Yorkshire seamer Hoggard after he contracted a back spasm in training during the build-up to today's opening Test at Lord's.

It is a major turnaround in thinking by England, who seemed set to bring in Leicestershire fast bowler Stuart Broad for his debut until Hoggard's injury prompted them to include 25-year-old Tremlett instead.

His last England appearance resulted in him being hit for 72 runs in his 10 overs during a one-day international against New Zealand in Perth during the winter.

Tremlett's inclusion also means England will be fielding one of their most inexperienced attacks since losing to India by 10 wickets 74 Tests ago at Mohali in 2001, when the number of appearances by their bowling line-up totalled 33 caps.

This time they will field a line-up of 37 caps with Lancashire seamer Jimmy Anderson making his first appearance since the final Test of last winter's Ashes tour while left-arm spinner Monty Panesar will be the most experienced Test bowler in the England line-up 17 appearances.

It will also be the first time since the successful 2005 Ashes series that England have gone into a Test without any member of the formidable attack who ended Australia's 18 years of dominance that summer.

England's new-look attack were given extra time to become accustomed to Test cricket with captain Michael Vaughan winning the toss and deciding to bat first.

India chose to stick with the experience of VVS Laxman, who is due to join Lancashire at the end of the season, ahead of Yuvraj Singh but otherwise named their expected line-up.
