The midlands county sit bottom of the Division Two table having failed to win any of their four matches so far and were immediately in trouble today after skipper Boeta Dippenaar won the toss and elected to bat.
The South African was the only batsman to provide any resistance with 39, but wickets fell regularly as they crashed to 89 for six by lunch. Jade Dernbach grabbed three wickets for Surrey while 20-year-old seamer Chris Jordan chipped in with two.
It was a different scenario in Division One, where only two wickets fell in the three games being played.
Durham captain Will Smith was one of the men out, trapped lbw to Warwickshire seamer Chris Woakes for one as the reigning champions reached 95 for one at Edgbaston.
Durham, seeking their third straight win, also saw Mark Stoneman retire hurt on 17, but they were otherwise untroubled as Michael Di Venuto (34) and Gordan Muchall (37) guided them to the interval.
Meanwhile, Bottom-placed Worcestershire began well at home against Yorkshire to be 105 for one, while Somerset's opening duo Marcus Trescothick (58) and Arul Suppiah (37) negotiated the opening session to reach lunch at 95 without loss away to Sussex.
In Division Two, Essex lost three early wickets but the shoots of recovery were evident at lunch as they were 71 for three against Kent at Tunbridge Wells.
Jason Gallian (one), Alastair Cook (eight) and Varun Chopra (three) fell cheaply to leave Essex 18 for three at one stage, before Matt Walker (30no) and Mark Pettini (20no) began to rebuild.
Glamorgan's Australian opener Mark Cosgrove led the way with an unbeaten 54 as his county were 82 for two against Northamptonshire. David Wigley took both wickets, removing Gareth Rees (four) and Ben Wright (six).
