Surrey snap up Harbhajan

Surrey have capitalised on India's surprise decision to overlook Harbhajan Singh for their tour England by signing the prolific off-spinner for the rest of the season.

Harbhajan was regarded as surplus to requirements by India's selectors and left out of the squad to face England in three Tests and seven one-day internationals later this summer.

The decision has prompted Surrey to swoop and re-sign Harbhajan, who played for them in 2005 and he will join The Oval playing ranks on July 2.

"Let's be honest, Surrey haven't had the start to the season that we would like, and we feel that a world-class spinner is an important part of improving our performance in the second half of the year," explained Alan Butcher, Surrey's cricket manager.

"Harbhajan is a great wicket-taker and with the club expecting Azhar Mahmood to play for Pakistan in the Twenty20 World Cup later this year, we no longer have to worry about a possible gap in our line-up from August onwards.

"Azhar has made a great contribution to the club, and it's clear that international duty is a distinct possibility for him later this year, so we want to be prepared."
