Sussex slump again

Sussex's defence of their LV County Championship Division One title suffered another blow as they were hammered by an innings and 106 runs by Kent at Canterbury.

Having lost only two matches for the whole of last season in winning the championship for a second time, they have now suffered two defeats in their first three games.

Resuming the second day on 19 for two, 349 runs behind the division's then bottom side, Sussex slumped to 102 all out with only captain Chris Adams (42) making any impression as Yasir Arafat and Ryan McLaren claimed four wickets apiece.

Following on, the second innings was not much better as Simon Cook ran through the order with six for 35, with wicketkeeper Matt Prior (35) top scorer.

England suffered an injury scare just a fortnight before the first Test against West Indies when captain Michael Vaughan had to retire injured while batting for leaders Yorkshire against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl. Vaughan had made 16 when he was hit on the hand by Australia paceman Stuart Clark and was forced to leave the field.

Yorkshire finished the day 49 for two - a lead of 52 runs having bowled out their hosts for 296. Hampshire were indebted to opener Jimmy Adams for his 105 as Nic Pothas' 70 not out was the next highest score as Tim Bresnan (four for 65) and Jason Gillespie (three for 40) did the damage.

Second-placed Warwickshire batted themselves into a strong position against Worcestershire at New Road as wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose hit an unbeaten 251 as the visitors made 610 for six. Ambrose hit 34 fours in a 325-ball innings and with Heath Streak making 66 captain Darren Maddy was able to declare after 163 overs.

The hosts then lost Australian Phil Jaques for nought and Vikram Solanki (35) as they reached 116 for two at stumps.

Surrey are in desperate trouble at Old Trafford as Lancashire reduced them to 34 for six in the second innings - a lead of just three runs.

The visitors did well to restrict the Red Rose to 315 - a first innings lead of 31 - as Stuart Law struck 15 fours in his 183-ball 120 but found little support with Neil Saker claiming five for 76. However, in just 13 overs before the close Dominic Cork (three for 17) and Glen Chapple (two for eight) left Surrey staring at a heavy defeat.
