Tait injury hands Johnson Aussie debut
03 January 2007
Johnson had already been expected partner Brett Lee and Stuart Clark in the attack for the first Test in Brisbane, but his maiden Test appearance has been virtually assured after Tait's elbow injury flared up following South Australia's Pura Cup match against Tasmania.
Tait's injury has also provided Tasmanian fast bowler Ben Hilfenhaus with an unexpected call-up to the squad, even though he is unlikely to make his debut ahead of Johnson.
"It's disappointing for Shaun to have suffered a slight aggravation to his elbow in the lead-up to the first Test," said chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch.
"Whilst this is disappointing for Shaun, it creates an opportunity for Ben Hilfenhaus to come into the squad. Ben richly deserves his opportunity after a magnificent Pura Cup season last year.
"He also impressed all with his involvement around the Australian squad in the one-day international series in India last month."
Tait, a key member of the victorious World Cup winning side, has battled elbow problems since returning from the West Indies and was forced to undergo surgery which cost him a place at the World Twenty20 in South Africa.
The South Australian had appeared to have fully recovered and has played recently for the Redbacks, including earlier this week against Tasmania at Bellerive Oval.
"He had been progressing well following elbow surgery in May this year and this would appear be a short-term setback," said Australia physiotherapist Alex Kountouris.
