Taylor: Gazza let down

Former England manager Graham Taylor believes Paul Gascoigne was let down by some of his close associates when he was in his prime.

Gascoigne has given several recent interviews in which he has spoken frankly about his personal problems, which have included drug and alcohol abuse and mental illness, and revealed he became so unwell he almost died.

"There is no doubt in my mind he was surrounded by people who if they are honest with themselves might look at themselves and say, 'Did we do the best for Paul Gascoigne?'," Taylor told BBC Radio Five Live. "I think there's one or two people, going back to that early period of his life when he was coming into celebrity status, who might look back and say, 'Have we had a part to play in this boy's life when it hasn't gone as well?'."

Gascoigne, now 41, retired from playing in 2004 after a short spell with Boston.

The 57-cap former England midfielder has spoken of his wish to return to football, and hopes to become involved in coaching again, having previously had a short spell as manager of Kettering.

Taylor, who he knows well from their time together with the England team, added: "It doesn't matter if you're a poor player, an average player, a good player or a great player, your career comes to an end.

"Paul Gascoigne is one of those players who has not been able to accept that there is no football.

"It's been very, very hard and I suspect may continue to be hard for him.

"But I tell you what - he'll have my support."
