Taylor has worked for the PFA full-time for 27 years and is rewarded in the New Year's Honours on his 63rd birthday.

The former striker said: "This is a nice honour for me personally and it is also lovely recognition for the PFA in our centenary year."

Veteran broadcaster Des Lynam, 65, receives an OBE for nearly four decades of broadcasting on sport for the BBC and ITV, said: "This has been a splendid surprise and I feel truly privileged."

There is also an OBE for another renowned broadcaster Bob Wilson, for services to the Willow Foundation charity set up after the death of his daughter Anna from cancer.
