The ex-Barcelona number two will work alongside Steve Clarke and under Avram Grant at Stamford Bridge.
A brief statement on the club's website, chelseafc.com, said: "Chelsea football club can confirm that Henk ten Cate has joined as assistant first-team coach, and we would like to welcome him to the club."
Earlier this week, the Dutchman quit his job as Ajax coach - with his move to Stamford Bridge to support new manager Grant and Clarke expected.
Chelsea said on Wednesday they had expected to finalise his contract within 24 hours, having previously agreed a compensation figure with Ajax.
Talk of Chelsea's interest in Ten Cate gathered pace, after rumours began to surface a week ago.
The 52-year-old came to prominence during a highly successful spell under Frank Rijkaard at Barcelona, where they won the Spanish title and Champions League.
