Tendulkar breaks Test record

India batsman Sachin Tendulkar claimed his place in the history books on Friday, becoming the leading run-scorer in Test cricket with a half-century against Australia in Mohali.

Tendulkar required 15 runs to top Brian Lara's record of 11,953 - and he passed that with ease to take the plaudits and help India gain a position of strength on the opening day of the second Test.

He was eventually dismissed for 88 but his display came second to his achievement, which was marked with fireworks and congratulations from the Australian players.

The visitors had threatened to grab the headlines on the opening day, left-arm paceman Mitchell Johnson picking up three top-order wickets in quick succession and triggering a mini-collapse.

But India wrested control thanks to a 142-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly (54 not out), the pair helping India finish the day on 311 for five.
