Tendulkar smashed 14 fours and a six during a 243-ball stint that, added to contributions of 109 by VVS Laxman and 67 from Sourav Ganguly, carried the tourists to 532 all out in response to Australia's first-innings score of 463.
The hosts had progressed to 13 without loss in their second innings when play ended.
With India on the ropes at 345 for seven, Australia failed to land the fatal blow and the tourists, guided by Tendulkar and inspired by Harbhajan Singh's 63 from 92 deliveries, recovered well.
Despite India's dogged batting performance, Brett Lee shone in the Australia attack, claiming his eighth Test five-wicket haul at the cost of 119 runs.
Mitchell Johnson and Brad Hogg finished the innings with two wickets each.
Australia openers Matthew Hayden (five) and Phil Jaques (eight) survived the last five overs of the day.
