Terrific Tariq lifts Cup
31 January 2007
Settled at the rear of the field by Kerrin McEvoy after missing the break slightly, he appeared to have a lot to do turning for home. Dunelight looked to have them all in trouble when kicking clear but McEvoy got to work on Tariq and he pulled away to win by a length and a quarter.
Asset, the 5-2 favourite, ran on for second, with Dunelight holding on for third.
McEvoy said: "From that draw Peter wanted me to get him back and switch off, so it's probably lucky we missed the break slightly and fell back in behind. It's the first time I have ridden him, but he picked up really well.
"Two out I thought he wasn't going to pick up, but I gave him a reminder and off he went. It rode like a nice race and they went a nice pace early and luckily my lad travelled really well."
Trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam added: "He's not very big, but he's got a very big heart. His work has been very good lately and I was very confident, but I was slightly worried about the track.
He was quite far back at one stage and I was getting a bit nervous, so it was a good job the jockey was a bit cooler than me! He did it easily in the end.
"I've now got him and Dutch Art and they are my two favourite horses, and one day they will have to clash. I'd love to go for the Queen Elizabeth II with him now or even the Haydock race (Sprint Cup), but wherever he goes it will be for a Group One next."
